Especially if it doesn’t feel like Christmas

We’re all feeling the effects of the constant stress from this year. Christmas is usually a time for enjoying your friends and family, but many people are choosing to stay home or forego their usual celebrations this year. Even if Christmas looks different this year, there are still ways you can get into the Christmas spirit.

Forget about your struggles and make some fun plans over your college Christmas break! Here are 5 ways you can celebrate Christmas, even if doesn’t feel like Christmas.

1. Start a New Tradition

Traditions bring emotional meaning to holidays, and Christmas may be the biggest holiday of all. Whether your family has traditions or not, intentionally starting something will give you something to look forward to every year. Oftentimes, it’s not what we do, but it’s the thought behind it that counts. If you want to do something charitable every year, donate to a toy drive or a charity. Maybe you want to do something fun like caroling. Make your tradition whatever you want it to be.

    2. Host a Virtual Gathering

Many families have relatives that don’t live close by. Some may even not be able to visit their loved ones due to health concerns. Make their Christmas unforgettable by setting up a virtual meeting! It won’t be the same hustle and bustle when everyone is staying together, but you’ll achieve that same closeness. If you have close friends who can’t visit, set up a virtual meeting with them during your break too!

      3. Look at Christmas Lights

Christmas lights are one of the most beloved Christmas traditions. Setting up lights and seeing other people’s lights is exciting every year, and marks the beginning of the Christmas season. Make your own hot chocolate or pick some up, then either drive by a neighborhood’s Christmas lights or walk up and down the streets. Some places have public Christmas light attractions that you can drive through. Nothing feels more like Christmas than getting bundled up with hats and mittens to look at the pretty lights. Get into the mood with a Women's Too Lit Light Up Ugly Christmas Sweater from Tipsy Elves LLC

        4. Bake Christmas Cookies

Christmas cookies come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they’re shaped like Santa, snowmen, reindeer, or Christmas trees. Sometimes they’re round or square with red and green frosting. Taking the extra step to makes your cookies to look festive will help them feel more like Christmas cookies rather than just regular cookies. If you end up with too many, you can give them away to neighbors or friends!

          5. Have a Secret Santa

If you have a lot of roommates, then you probably don’t want or have time to buy each of them a gift. Secret Santa has to be planned ahead of time, but it’s totally worth it. Everyone picks a name out of a hat, and you buy that person a gift rather than buying everyone a gift. Before you leave for winter break, you can plan a little roommate gathering and exchange gifts! Making the dollar limit low will encourage creativity and maybe a little humor that’s often needed during finals!
